250 Rider Final at Town Run
Wrapping up the 2006 DINO Mountain Bike Series was the biggest race of the year, topping the series opener by a just a few riders. Many first time racers rolled across their first DINO finish line on this popular trail
in Indianapolis. A total of 250 racers (plus a dozen in the Shimano Youth Series) made it to the start line... and most made it to the finish line as well!
For the Intro and Beginner categories, it was a learning experience on passing and being passed. The course is fast and relatively smooth, making cornering and speed key issues.
In the Expert/Pro division, it was a game of nerves. Beginning with start line positioning, the lead pack rode a furious pace which increased each lap. A group of 6 riders made a breakaway that set up a final lap shootout. Proven performers Matt Battin, Anthony Slowinski, and Jean-Luc Serriere were in the mix. Also in that pack was Brad Nelson, a fast-rising 16 year old; Eric Pirtle, a top rider
from St Louis MO, and David Dygert, who set the fastest single lap in a time trial a week earlier.
Going into the final (fourth) lap these six riders were close enough it could be anyone's race. Some 26 minutes later, Eric Pirtle (Scott / Shimano) popped up the final climb into the large gathering of spectators to hit the finish line first at 1:46:48. Between each of the first four riders were just three seconds apeice; Slowinski (Clarksville A-Team) taking second, Serriere (Bicycle Station)
third, and Brad Nelson (Nebo Ridge Bicycles) in fourth. A short gap later were Battin and Dygert. All six were within 30 seconds of each other.
Battin's finish was high enough to secure his series championship at 5 points ahead of his Bicycle Station teammate, Serriere (2nd). Don Galligher, despite DNFing at the final race, finished third overall in the series.
Expert Women and teammates Heather Coddington and Sally Marchand Collins (Moore / Gray Goat) rode together but Coddington pulled away for the win at 1:30:51 for three laps. Third place Nicole Borem (Trailhouse) narrowly pulled off the series title over Coddington.
Sport racing was exciting as well. Scott Colvin posted the fastest three-lap Sport time, 1:23:48, starting with 19-29. In his wake were Jim Frazier (35-39) and Ernie Calderin (19-29). Steve Harpster was the first finisher from the competitive Open wave. The top two overall Sport Men in the series didn't even need points from Town Run - Richard Mezo moved to expert and 2nd Joe Casady suffered a
DNF.
Women Sport rider Caryn Atkinson won the race at Town Run, though series champ Jayne Prater stood on the sidelines.
The series awards will be presented at the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association's annual meeting, January or February date to be announced.
Other race 7 winners included Ryan Cornwell in Juniors, Darrel Sparzo in Intro, Nicholas Slade in Beginner Men, and Colleen Cook in Beginner Women.
Post-race awards included many door prizes from Bicycle Garage Indy, Magura, Kenda Tires, and Sigma; the Trek $2000 certificate for went to Lars McCain of Nashville, and the Bontrager Race disc wheelset was awarded to Chris Molnar of Ft Wayne.
