Heat, Hills, and Humidity In North Vernon

The hilliest course in this year's DINO Trail Run Series combined with a hot, humid day to make a challenging race this July 3. As part of the weekend's DINO Challenge Festival, the 5k and 15k DINO Trail Run races sent nearly 200 runners through the spectacular geography that defines Muscatatuck County Park.

Though storms threatened to dampen the weekend's events, all events went off without a hitch. Friday afternoon storms left the trails slightly slippery and created humid conditions. Following the DINO Trail Run, outdoor enthusiasts had the opportunity to participate or watch various mountain bike races and experience the Dynamik Adventures ropes challenges and clinics with the highlight being a zip line ride across the Muscatatuck River.

The top two spots in the 15k were a virtual replay of the prior race in Indianapolis, with Tito Downer and George Dewitt atop the podium. Third this time went to 14 year old Sam Bird of Columbia City IN. Jennifer Hutton of Bloomington claimed her first DINO win, ahead of Susan Fay and current series leader Janet Cole in the 15k women's division.

Joe Hoffman held on to his 5k series lead with a third place at Muscatatuck. Jesse Cacy finished first and Rick Goddard second, both just under 21 minutes for the 5k. Melissa Beaver chalked up her second win this year with a close finish over Cindy Harris, who was recovering from injury. Lori Goddard's third place finish hoists her into the series lead for 5k women.

Next DINO Trail Run: August 28

Mark your calendars for the next DINO Trail Run, as the series heads to eastern Indiana for the Doin'it Outdoors stop on August 28. Located near Liberty (just south of Richmond IN), the site offers a surprisingly challenging route through the property's numerous ravines. The course starts with a relatively easy and wide trail along the top of the ravines then dives toward the creek for the return. The 15k is a single lap course that gets progressively more difficult through the distance. After the running race, rent a Doin'it Outdoors kayak and go paddling on Whitewater or Brookville Lake.

All DINO Trail Run Series races are open to anyone, but those who compete in four or more this year are eligible for season standings as well. With three races remaining in 2004, anyone who has entered one race already can still qualify. Each runner's top five scores through the series are totalled for the standings.

Runners seeking points toward the series will typically find it easier to obtain points at races further from Indianapolis . The August 28 race should be no exception.
