Brutal Day at Westwood

A tough day faced runners on the recently completed Westwood Park trail. Heat and humidity created a heat index near 110 degrees for the August 20 5k and 15k races.

In the 5k, Lance Nelson pulled off his first victory. James Harris and Nicholas Hollar finished in second and a close third, respectively. New Castle resident Duane Dye was just behind Hollar for the Masters' award.
Brooke Fihma topped Cindy Harris in the Women's 5k, a step in what looks to be an exciting points race for the series.

The 15k was a cruel test on its participants. During a challenging loop completely around the park's lake, Jimmy Wills took the lead early. With less than 1/2 mile to go in the race, Wills passed out and fell on the trail. Following runners discovered him, and aid station workers rushed to revive Wills. He was soon transported to the hospital in New Castle. Two other runners also experienced heat exhaustion, receiving assistance in the finishing area, and then taken to the hospital as well. The finish line area, complete with iced Gatorade and Kinetico drinking water, was a welcome sight for many.
Drew Bryenton claimed a bittersweet victory as the heat had befallen his friend.
Michael Hover's 2nd place at Westwood bumped him into the series lead, the same day as potential champ Russ Goodman was running the Leadville 100 race in Colorado.
Sarah Arens remarkable 1:15:51 finish was just a few minutes off of the men's win, ahead of 2001 series champ Lisa Harber, who recently returned to Indiana. Allison Wolf's third place sends her to the top of the 15k series chart.
