While the final race was the showdown for close contests in the series standings, it also was a debut race for a large number of runners, including most of the race winners. George Dewitt of Indianapolis kept close reins on Mike Heffron, who had won this year's first two 15k races and taken second at race 3. Entering the final lap of three, Dewitt put a gap on Heffron that would hold until the end - but by only four seconds - finishing at 1:03:32. Howard Harrell's third place finish came just under a minute behind, with prior series leaders Mark Doctor and Russ Goodman a full 3 minutes later. Jill Douthit, of Carmel Indiana, pulled off a similar upset in 1:18:02. Douthit topped the 15k Women's series leaders Tina Fearnow (1:20:53) and Kristy Lippencott (1:22:35). The 5k Men's race was also topped by a DINO rookie. It was a close finish as Muncie runner Alex Marehbanks crossed at 20:34, followed by Jim Goddard (20:37) and Charles Grace (20:39). Series champion James Harris followed in fourth at 21:35. The only non-surprise of the day was the Women's 5k, where Cindy (Moll) Harris took top honors (25:55). She was followed by Angela Minnifield and Lori Goddard. This threesome also scored 1-2-3 in the series. Southwestway Park's trails provided a good challenge. The 5k loop began with a flat and fast 2-mile beginning and a demanding final mile which crested Mann Hill three times on various approaches. The lap ended with a wild downhill to the finish (or into the next lap for 15k runners).
