The start list represented 19 different states and 3 countries. A point-to-point route sent runners through the demanding hills and rugged trails of Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests. As sunrise lit up the trails, a cold but gorgeous morning greeted the runners boarding the buses to the start line. A short stretch on pavement led to progressively narrower trails as the pack thinned. As the race progressed, Curt Carey took a sizeable lead. An unfortunate mix-up on the course set him back in the standings, where he would eventually finish fourth overall. Howard Harrell (Greenwood IN), James Gomez (Spring Lake, MI), and Russ Goodman (Bloomington, IN) would lead the pack into the finish line in a remarkably close finish. The top three were all within 45 seconds, as Harrell clocked 3:10:38 with Goodman's third at 3:11:20 The women's overall division was won by Martha Jaworski of Boise, Idaho. Jaworski's time of 3:57:11 placed her with the top 30 men. Second went to Linda Barhorst (Ft Loramie, OH) about 5 minutes later, with Pat Lilly (Sardinia OH) taking third at 4:20:24. The Yellowwood Lake Fun Run, approximately 5 miles long, was won handily by Sam Bird of Columbia City, IN. Lori Minnerick of Spring Lake MI was the women's winner. Runner-ups were Jay Church and Emily Richards. Although the competition for overall awards and age group ranking was exciting, most participants simply enjoyed the challenge and the scenery. Here are just a few of their post-race comments. "I had previously run 2 marathons 11 years ago, on the road, so this was a new challenge for me. AND, I loved it. Definitely the most physically demanding thing I have ever done. ... This race has changed my running direction away from the typical road races." "It was a tough race and I think it wasn't so much the elevation gain and loss, but the many stream crossings, muddy trails, and what seemed like thousands of fallen trees and tree limbs that we had to hop over (okay, thousands is an exaggeration) that really sapped the energy right out of me. I loved it! " "I must say that this weekend's Tecumseh Trail Marathon was one of the best organized races I have ever participated in! Well done!!!" "That was the most awesome running experience of my life! My congratulations to you on a very well organized event. Put me down for next year!
