MISSION ON THE MUSCATATUCK PLAY-BY-PLAY

All participants stand on a line. Packets (topo map, Brush Creek Map, #1 Instructions) are on a line marked 100' away.
Team must tie 200' cordelette to "belay" and to "runner". Runner goes across field and finds team's packet. Return to gravel drive and get rope untangled.
Gear check: 200' of cordelette.
***SEGMENT #1 INSTRUCTIONS "DINORIENTEERING"
ORIENTEERING
Find three checkpoints inside Muscatatuck County Park.
The first point (below) is be as assigned randomly. Each point has bearing and distance to the next (numerically) point. You must punch the three checkpoints in order starting with your assigned first point:
(1) 1911 1658 C4 Draw - Az 187° Dist 1085m To CP (2)
(2) 1898 1551 C1 Finger Back - Az 37° Dist 1020m To CP (3)
(3) 1960 1632 C6 Creekbed - Az 298° Dist 555m To CP (1)
After finding all three, report to (4) 1927 1632 C7 Shelter / Manned CP for next set of instructions.
***SEGMENT #2 INSTRUCTIONS "HIT THE ROAD"
CYCLING
On bicycle to Brush Creek access site
Checkpoints along the way: along roads south side of Musc River
(5) 2135 1749 B6 Bridge
(6) B3 Finger - From the north side at the east end of the RR bridge (east side of creek) located at 2166 1932, use a grid azimuth of 306° for a distance of 250 meters to find CP(6).
(7) 2497 2232 B1Creekbed
(8) 2732 2432 B2 Gravel drive / Manned CP
Park bicycles.
Gear check: water purifier
Race volunteers (secretly) load bikes for transport back to "valley shelter". Helmets must be carried, not left with bikes.
Get canoe, paddles, and PFD at Brush Creek. Volunteer punches #8 and gives instruction sheet only when team ready to paddle off.

Using paper and crayon, get a gravestone tracing from Robert Toler's grave marker, including the year of birth. Do not punch your passport for this checkpoint! It will be done at HQ by showing a race official your tracing at HQ.
(14) 1985 1327 B8 Bridge / Manned CP Canoe take-out
Race official punches card and gives instructions only after canoe / gear properly placed.

Return to County Park via Tunnel Mill

Rappel - after entire team completes rappel, race staff sends participants across footbridge and up steps following ribbon markers.
Tyrolean Traverse - Punch passport when finished (18)
From shelter to "woods" side. After entire team completes traverse, walk down trail to "valley shelter" and get on bikes.
CYCLING First team expected 2:30 pm Actual: approx. 4 pm
Race staff instructs participants to follow the ribbons along the trail to a manned checkpoint.
Follow mountain bike trail around the park counterclockwise to campground restroom
Bucket Brigade Special Challenge - near the campground bathroom
Fill a 5-gallon bucket using containers they are carrying. Buckets placed 100' from water spigots.
Upon completion punch (19)
Instruct riders to continue along trail to another manned checkpoint
Bike Mechanic Special Challenge - blocking trail exit into the TA.
Dismantle bicycles and pass through 8"x25" openings in 4x8' plywood sheet. Gear check: pedal wrench, front and rear lights, headlamp. After completion, pass on to HQ

CYCLING
All mandatory cycling gear required.
Points 21-28 may be obtained in any order desired.
(21) and (22) inside Selmier State Forest - Bikes must be parked at one of two parking lots:

Bicycles are not allowed off-the main gravel road. State Forest staff have been instructed to report any team going off the road with bicycles. This also would endanger our future events.
